Results of the 2020 Gender & Diversity Monitoring
Students
Since the last report in 2017, the share of female students has remained at 35 % across all subjects and all levels. In 2019, the percentage of female students pursuing a Master’s degree rose from 35 % to 37 %. However, this increase was counterbalanced by a slight decrease at both the Bachelor’s and doctoral levels. As in the previous years, the proportion of female students varies strongly depending on the subject. So for example, the share of female Bachelor’s students ranged from 23 % in Economics to 53 % in Law.
Faculty
The HSG appointment process has been professionalised in order to tackle specifically the existing gender bias in academia. This effort resulted in an increase in female representation among Full Professors by four percentage points to 17 % in 2019, compared to the previous reporting period. However, the representation of women across all categories of professorships, including Senior Lectureships, has declined slightly – by one percentage point from 19 % to 18 %. With the fixed-term lecturers taken into account, women make up 22 % of the University’s total teaching staff.
Administration
The HSG administration remains the area of the University with the highest proportion of female employees. Across all units and functions, 59 % of the administrative personnel in 2019 were female. Depending on the unit, the proportion of women varies significantly. For example, the proportion of female IT personnel is much smaller (13 %) than that of the library staff (74 %). One very positive development since the last report has been the significant increase in the representation of women at the upper management level. Here the female proportion has risen from 32 % to 46 %.
